Former National team gymnast, active gymnastics coach and practising dentist, Dr. Hoe Wah Toon does it all.
Having started gymnastics at the age of 7, Wah Toon has medalled in both Singapore National Championships and Singapore Open, took part in his first overseas competition at 11 and has gone on to raise Singapore’s flag in the Commonwealth and Asian Games.
Gymnastics develops fundamental movement skills, increases confidence and competence and promotes healthy participation in physical activity. It helps in keeping fit and builds skills of control, flexibility and strength. Gymnastics also nurtures character as Wah Toon shares.
“As we train hard, we become better athletes. Sports instil values – discipline, perseverance, tenacity. It helps us become a stronger version of ourselves mentally and physically, which benefits us in and outside of the sport.”
Being a gymnast for many good years, it may have also influenced his choice of career outside of sports – dentistry – as they both share a common attribute of precision and accuracy.
"In gymnastics, precision is how accurately you execute your moves in a split second. You have to be extremely accurate to perform a skill perfectly. In dentistry, precision is in how we refine our work. We operate on the small teeth within the constricted and dark space of the oral cavity.”
Besides practising dentistry, Wah Toon is also actively coaching children from developmental to competitive levels in a club setting. He believes that introducing children to gymnastics at a young age isn’t about deciding a sport for them, it’s about establishing a variety of skills that they can utilize in whatever sport or activity they might one day pursue, as well as developing their minds and confidence that will carry over to all aspects of life.
By starting here, with Gymnastics, it creates opportunities to make friends, establish confidence, level up physical literacy and learn fun new skills. With these foundational skills, it can bring you anywhere in sport and further in life. The world is your oyster.
