RG TAC Update – March 2024
In a recent gathering of the RG Technical Advisory Committee (TAC) on March 7, 2024, a myriad of topics related to gymnastics judging and competition were discussed and deliberated upon.
One of the focal points of the meeting was the finalisation of shared goals by the TAC members, accompanied by the selection of the acronym "VIRTUE" to encapsulate their values. This acronym represents the pillars of vision, integrity, respect, teamwork, unity, and excellence, reflecting the committee's commitment to upholding these principles in their endeavours.
The guidelines for meeting participation were also thoroughly reviewed, underlining the advisory role of the Technical Advisory Committee and emphasising the importance of active engagement from all members.
A significant portion of the discussion revolved around the outcomes of the judges' review committee's analysis on scoring consistency observed in recent competitions. To address this issue, plans were put forth to establish a new review committee, comprising of an overseas judge, specifically for National Championships.
Moreover, the TAC members shed light on their ongoing efforts to mitigate unconscious bias among judges. Strategies discussed included the issuance of formal warnings and a review of the judges' code of conduct policy. Inspired by practices from the International Gymnastics Federation (FIG), the committee also deliberated on the implementation of guidelines and disciplinary actions for judges, including the establishment of a neutral disciplinary commission.
Another key topic of discussion centred around the FIG judges' ranking system and their allocation to competitions. The need for transparency and fairness in this process was emphasized, with a comprehensive review of the P024 Judges allocation policy.
As the meeting drew to a close, plans were made to refine ideas and continue discussions in subsequent meetings. The overarching theme emphasised throughout was the paramount importance of transparency, fairness, and consistency in gymnastics judging practices, underscoring the committee's unwavering dedication to uphold the integrity of the sport.
