A retrospective on Wellbeing, Resilience and High Performance with Positive Sports Coaching

Published Mon 05 Apr 2021

If you see your name in the picture above, thank you for joining us in the first installation of a 4-part series we have going on with Matthew Scholes from Positive Sports Coaching, using the science of positive psychology to up sports performance as well as athlete wellbeing!

In this session we discussed about Positive Psychology and Sports Coaching - Wellbeing, Resilience and High Performance and how we can turn the wheel of Positive Sports Coaching and put it in motion.

We had great questions put in from coaches in attendance and 2 questions stood out:

Q1: What is the smallest change we can make today in our coaching ithat will immediately make a huge difference?

A1: It is clear from the presentation how feedback and interactions are communicated positively i.e. language, tone are key components in growing resilient athletes. It is also about the impact of  THAT ONE interaction that sticks which could make or break the rapport between coach and athlete and that's what makes a huge difference in an instant.

Q2: How do we help athletes who are struggling mentally? How do we prevent it from escalating?

A2: Following the wheel above, coaches can help athletes deal with the negative by keeping feedback around the negative incident objective, matter-of-fact, sharing and enforcing consistent strategies. However it is also important to note sometimes in order to further assist our athletes and in light of their welfare, we may need to reach out to professionals help if we deem the situation necessary, especially when health and safety is concerned.

For coaches who weren't able to join us live that day, Matthew does make the recordings available for everyone for 2 weeks and it is great to be able to go back, listen again and pick out more takeaway. This will also be the same sharing format for the next 3 sessions and that said, you can now register for the next workshop on Friday, 25 June (10am-11.30am) via https://www.singaporegymnastics.org.sg/events/91278/
