A review of many firsts in 2022

Published Tue 27 Dec 2022

Singapore Gymnastics (SG) is proud of the entire gymnastics community who have stayed engaged with gymnastics amidst the pandemic. It has been a year of many firsts.

We revised membership scheme now has NINE distinct categories to serve more athlete members within the community. In particular, Singapore Gymnastics has doubled the number of events in 2022 – this includes participation events for recreational athletes as well. Singapore Gymnastics saw an increase in 15% of the total number of members in comparison to 2021.

Some of the athlete events ran for the first time included

  • Lunar Competition, a SG's initiative to provide an opportunity for high-level athletes a chance to compete and prepare for the 2022 National Championships. The competition floor has seen 9 Men’s Artistic, 17 Women’s Artistic and 41 Rhythmic FIG Juniors and Senior athletes.
  • Gymnastics Carnival was brought to life with the reintroduction of GymFest, the very first run of TeamGym ever as well as a whole new of skills list for Gym Challenge. SG has always envisioned the sports to be all inclusive for everyone and it was heartening to see a positive turnout of 229 athletes joining us participating, enjoying and showcasing the sport.

Continuing with firsts, SG organized its first Inaugural Charity Dinner and the total gross amount raised was $249,834. The night was not only financially successful, but also a true celebration where the community come together proper after more than two years. The event would not have been possible without the support of the partners, sponsors, clubs, members and the gymnastic community.

SG was also awarded the 2022 Charity Transparency Award in November 2022. This award was introduced in 2016 by the Charity Council, and is awarded to charities with good disclosure practices that the Charity Transparency Framework (CTF) recommends. SG is extremely grateful to be given this award and strives to be open and transparent for the accountability to stakeholders and club members because we value trust, and we believe that it is vital for us to maintain the trusting relationship built among our community to us to progress Gymnastics in Singapore.

In other news, SG has seen some of our individuals experiencing and participating in their own events.

  • Ms Lim Heem Wei welcomed the Queen’s Baton at Jewel Changi Airport early this year and serving as chef de mission to Team Singapore for the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games
  • Tan Sze En, has been awarded the Meritorious Award from the Singapore Sports Awards (SSA)
  • SG participated in the first athlete led webinar for athletes in safeguarding, held in June 2022, organised by FIG. Singapore Gymnastics also attended the symposium during the 51st FIG Artistic Gymnastics World Championships to discuss the topic of safeguarding, with our General Manager, Karen Norden, representing us. In the space of safeguarding, SG is also now a new member organisation to the Safe Sport programme with Safe Sport Commission Singapore.

With the review of many firsts in 2022, Singapore Gymnastics is excited to bring even more of such firsts in 2023 for the gymnastic community. These achievement will not be possible without the support from the community, and we look forward to fostering a closer relationship as we set forth to achieve much more together in 2023!
