Building a network of community leaders

Published Mon 21 Dec 2020

There are many ways in which coaches learn and improve on their coaching skills. One of the most powerful learning tool is to get themselves a mentor. Mentoring offers support other learning experiences don't. While there are different ways to learn, there an importance of supporting coaches in practice. The role of the coach mentor then is to act as an experienced and trusted advisor, linking knowledge and skills to practise in the authentic envirionment of the gym.

Singapore Gymnastics (SG) recently launched our pilot Coach Mentoring Programme with the assistance of Gene Schembri, who is also our key developer of our Intermediate discipline-specific coaching courses. We were joined by various senior coaches nominated from our affiliated clubs and we have many positive and insightful discussions on how coach mentors can support their mentee coaches in the different aspects coaching. The purpose of the this programme is to give coach mentors the tools and strategies they can use when working with mentees and other coaches.

As part of club quality assurance, by 2022 every club can and should have a mentor to help foster young coaches be it they are fresh from coaching courses, within their clubs, and from the community. This is also the first of many initiatives to slowly but surely form a network of leaders within our community to guide and and nurture upcoming coaches.

As such, we will be running a Coach Mentoring programme on Wednesday 31 March 2021 and we want to invite clubs to nominate their coaches who they believe to have the right aptitude and attitude to become coach mentors to guide and help junior coaches. Criterias apply.

Together we can bring the sport from strength to strength.
