Singapore Gymnastics is proud to announce the upcoming Fitter for Life Workshop, an initiative designed to introduce gymnastics programs tailored for the elderly. Scheduled to be conducted by renowned physiotherapist Karen Koh this workshop promises to equip participants with the knowledge and skills to support a growing demographic while diversifying club offerings.

Gymnastics for an Ageing Population

As Singapore's population continues to age, the importance of promoting health and mobility among the elderly has never been greater. The Fitter for Life program, developed by Gymnastics Australia, is specifically crafted to address the unique needs of seniors. The program focuses on enhancing strength, flexibility, coordination, and balance—essential components for maintaining an active and independent lifestyle.

Why Fitter for Life Matters

Gymnastics is a sport for all ages, but historically, older adults have been underserved by clubs. The Fitter for Life program, developed by Gymnastics Australia, targets key areas of health for seniors, including:

  • Balance: Reducing fall risks through improved stability.
  • Flexibility: Enhancing mobility for daily activities.
  • Strength: Building endurance and maintaining independence.
  • Coordination: Supporting better physical control and agility.

With falls and inactivity posing significant risks for older adults, integrating gymnastics into their fitness routines can reverse the effects of ageing and boost confidence, independence, and overall well-being.

Expanding Opportunities for Gymnastics Clubs

For gymnastics clubs, this program is a game-changer. Incorporating Fitter for Life into their repertoire allows clubs to:

  • Broaden Diversity in Offerings: Transition from youth-focused programs to include a senior-friendly initiative.
  • Maximize Club Downtime: Run classes during off-peak hours, such as mornings and early afternoons, ensuring the club is utilized more efficiently.
  • Reach a New Demographic: Attract a wider audience, creating a sense of community and inclusion for all ages.
