Singapore Gymnastics is pleased and proud that under the current adversity our team of coaches and staff have risen to the challenge preparing and delivering comprehensive Home-Based Training (HBT) programme for all our National Training Centre athletes.

Our coaches have been extremely busy setting up these individualised and specific HBT programmes for each group which comprises of online training, self-directed home programmes and YouTube videos. Our HBT programmes are also being supported by international technical experts who understand gymnastics and are able to provide supplementary training such as ballet, pilates, yoga etc. We are excited to have an international choreographer and gymnastics dance expert Stacey Umeh join the team taking ballet for athletes during this period, along with gymnastics specific physiotherapist and Pilates instructor Alice Baquie from Australia.

Over the next few weeks, we will continue to introduce extra activities, other special guests and programmes that will ensure our athletes maintain motivation while continuing to maintain a level of fitness and physical preparation during these unusual times. We will also have in place our physical testing programme for all our disciplines which will be used to monitor our athletes while at home, ensuring they can safely return to training after COVID-19.

SSI will also be assisting SG with the HBT programme by offering different sports science, sports medicine sessions for some of our groups. We will also look to start to roll out the psychology programme we have been developing with SSI and NYSI.

In summary, the aim of our HBT programme is to:

  1. Stay as connected with the athletes as much as possible
  2. Encourage and guide athletes to maintain a form of exercise and physical preparation
  3. Assist with the return to a training programme that will make a big impact on the ability to safely return to the gym
  4. Help with mental clarity and structure during this Circuit Breaker period
  5. Implement some educational aspects of gymnastics around nutrition, judging and mental preparation

It is unprecedented times and we are also aware that our athletes during this period may experience uneasiness or anxiety with the disruption to their lifestyle and gymnastics training regime. Our coaches will be regularly checking in with the athletes to monitor the situation and we are fortunate to have the support from the Sports Psychologists at SSI who are on standby to support our athlete’s well-being.
