High Performance Symposium & Master Classes – Son Yeon Jae (RG)

Published Thu 24 May 2018

Introducing our third line up for the High Performance Symposium & Master Classes – Son Yeon Jae (RG)

Recently retired South Korean individual rhythmic gymnast, Ms Son Yeon Jae, is a pioneer and inspiration to the Rhythmic Gymnastics (RG) scene in Asia. In a sport with a long history of domination by European powerhouses such as Russia, Bulgaria, Ukraine and Belarus, Ms Son was the first Asian in many regards to break through the competition at the pinnacle of RG.

Ms Son has many firsts as well as accolades under her belt. Notably, she is the 2014 Asian Games All-Around Champion. She also is the first and only Asian thus far to win gold in the All-Around at the Federation Internationale de Gymanstique (FIG) World Cup Series. Her biggest record for Asian RG is perhaps placing 5th and 4th in the 2012 and 2016 Olympic Games respectively - the furthest any Asian rhythmic gymnast has ever gone at the Olympics.

A role model in many ways, Ms Son’s story also illustrates that mighty sporting achievements do not come without great sacrifice. In a bid to attain her Olympic dream, Ms Son decisively gave up training in her home country and moved to Russia, Novogorsk, to train with an expert coach.

We at Singapore Gymnastics (SG) are very honoured and happy to have Ms Son in Singapore with us for the first time. Toall rhythmic gymnasts – Be prepared for a unique and incredible opportunity to meet, train with and be enthralled by RG royalty, Ms Son Yeon Jae!
