Singapore's sole representative, Tan Sze En, can take a tiny breather for now as she wrapped up her debut at the 49th World Championships. It was an important competition for Sze En, not just because she was at an international platform competing with the best around the world, but it is also where she learny that she could control her nerves while still enjoying the element of competing, after years of hard work.
Sze En put up a solid competition as she hit 4 apparatus on an exciting night during the qualifiers, scoring a total of 48.098, in what was a fine display despite a minor falter on the beam and a penalty deduction during the floor exercise. Looking towards the upcoming 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo, in a complicated qualifying system Sze En’s performance could see her take one of the last allocated spots for the 2020 Olympics through reallocation of athlete quota' s, but now we need to sit back & relax.
With what she has achieved from World Championships, Sze En has positioned herself as the third ranked gymnasts in the qualifiers amongst the athletes who will be competing in the upcoming SEA Games with her, alongside team mates Nadine Joy Nathan and Shayne Tan. It is a great indication for what is to come at SEA Games where Sze En has shown she is a true medal chance on bars and beam.
2019 will be Sze En’s first SEA Games; she missed the 2017 games due to injuries in training days away from flying to KL with the team. As you read this now, Sze En is already back in the states training for SEA Games 2019, held in Philippines Manila from the 1-9 December 2019.
The grind never stop and we can't wait to see what Sze En and the rest of the team will bring to the floor.
