June was a busy month for gymnastics in Singapore

Published Thu 11 Jul 2019

June was a very busy month for Singapore Gymnastics. Not only was the annual Singapore Open held, but also 14 other activities, all designed to support and develop clubs, coaches and athletes in Singapore. Over 170 athletes and their coaches participated, and will now go back to their clubs to share their knowledge and experience with all of the Singapore gymnastics community.

The month started with the MAG & WAG Athlete Masterclasses led by International Experts Stacey Umeh, Eric Boucharin and Songliang Xiong. 38 gymnasts  and coaches attended the day, with their coaches participating in the High Performance Coach Symposium the following day. A week later the Trampoline Masterclass was held, led by three-time Olympic Coach Bo Tureby and the following day, Bo hosted our Trampoline High Performance Symposium for coaches. Lastly, world renowned Expert Nadya Aleksandrova led our Rhythmic Gymnastics Masterclass with over 80 gymnasts and their coaches attending, and again, the next day was spent working with our coaches at an RG High Performance Coach Symposium.

The following week we hosted the first of our Singapore Gymnastics Development Programme camps for MAG & WAG. International coaches Tae Tyrrel and Fiona Kenneally (supported by our own NTC Coaches) led the camps over 3 days which was aimed at the 30 gymnasts (and their coaches) aged between 8 – 14 years old who accepted their invitations based on performances at National Championships in March. Soon after wrapping up our WAG & MAG programme, we moved on to Rhythmic Gymnastics. The RG camp was run by International Expert Katie Sigsworth (supported by our own NTC coaches) and allowed 30 gymnasts and their coaches to work towards improving the future of Rhythmic Gymnastics in Singapore. All three camps focused on developing physical and technical basics of athletes. This greatly reduces time lost due to injury in the future, so that difficult skills can be learned more effectively. For more information about the Singapore Gymnastics Development Programme please click here

At the end of the month we welcomed FIG Academes for Level 1 in both Rhythmic and Artistic gymnastics. Each Academy ran over one week with over 50 coaches from Singapore, China, Malaysia, Estonia, India, Finland, Korea, Philippines and Colombia participated in the course.

We would like to thank all of the visiting experts, clubs, coaches and gymnasts who participated in our events.
