The TAC appointed MAG National Programme Working Group recently convened to discuss changes to the Men's Artistic Gymnastics (MAG) National Programme. The focus was on enhancing performance levels and increasing participation.

Key Discussion Points:

  1. Programme Gaps and Challenges
    • Identified gaps between various levels, particularly between Levels 2 and 3, and Levels 3 and 4.
    • Suggestions included simplifying transitions for club and school gymnasts.
  2. Structure and Standards
    • The programme, inspired by British gymnastics, features levels for participation and stages for competitive performance.
    • Challenges in routine standards and apparatus disparities were noted.
  3. Detailed Feedback
    • Emphasised progressive skill introduction and consistency in routine descriptions.
    • Addressed judging issues and suggested simplifying routines for younger gymnasts.
    • Currently a survey has been distributed to the community to garner more feedback on the current programme as well as thoughts for moving forward with MAG in Singapore.
  4. Vault and Apparatus
    • Proposed earlier introduction of vault table elements and alignment with inter-school competition skills.

Actions and Timeline:

  1. Programme Review
    • The decision on if it is all to be implemented for 2025 will be made in August once the Working Group has reviewed the extent of the changes required in the skill matrix. It was noted that we have a base and the concept of two streams: National Levels and Stages will remain.
    • If for implementation for 2025, the draft changes to the skills matrix for both levels and stages to be completed by the end of August, with a framework ready by the end of September for distribution to the community.
  2. Review and Development
    • Teams have been assigned to focus on different programme aspects, ensuring alignment with junior international athlete skills.
  3. School Integration
    • Meetings planned with MOE to discuss age restrictions and adjustments, as well as to see how to increase participation in schools.
  4. Ongoing Adjustments
    • Continuous feedback and adjustments post-September based on community input will occur with the manual and resource available by the end of the year.

Next Steps:

The next meeting is scheduled for four weeks to review progress.
