On 1st December 2018, a total of 24 Men’s Artistic Gymnastics National Training Centre athletes and 3 coaches – Ryosuke Kusumi, Desmond Cheng and Park Giyong embarked on their 16 days training camp in Brisbane, Australia. For majority of the younger athletes, they were both excited and nervous as they did not know what to expect with this being their first-time experience to train overseas and to be away from their families.
During this period, the boys will be training in the Queensland Gymnastics High Performance Centre twice a day and we are privileged to have the assistance of coach Sean Wilson (MAG Head Coach, High Performance Manager), Trent Lawrie (MAG Development Coach, High Performance Venue Manager), as well as Coach Sergei Chinkar (former personal coach of Vitaly Scherbo; World All-Around Champion, 6 time Gold Medallist at the 1992 Olympic Games. The gymnasts will also be participating in combined training sessions with the gymnasts from the Queensland Gymnastics High Performance Training Centre. This is an excellent opportunity for the gymnasts to exchange training tips and forge new friendships.
Gymnastics training aside, the team is also fortunate to have Mr Jack Hudson-Williams (Bachelor of Science – psychology double major, Master of Psychology – sports & exercises) working and sharing with the athletes and coaches some mental skills (tips & tricks) for gymnastics. Besides sports psychology support, Mr Andrew McGough (Specialist Sports Physiotherapist) will also be working with the boys, giving them physio support and extending their knowledge on how some simple and short exercises/stretches can play a crucial role in injury prevention. Lastly, we will have Ms. Jessica Bax who will be having a nutrition session with the team.
