The Women’s Artistic Gymnastics (WAG) National Programme is set to undergo important changes, with the aim of enhancing both athlete participation and performance. Following a comprehensive review meeting held on August 13, the Working Group appointed by the WAG TAC outlined a strategic plan to address existing gaps and improve the overall programme.
The meeting, led by the National Office, focused on balancing excellence in high-performance gymnastics with the broader goal of expanding participation. It was emphasised there is a need to make the programme more inclusive, especially at the lower levels, while also retaining and supporting athletes as they progress to higher levels.
Underscored by the importance of this balance, the Working Group reviewed feedback received from the gymnastics community.
The Working Group, comprising Nabilah Littleford, Joshua Loucks, Gerrit Beltman, and Jaclyn Lin Jing Jing, concluded that while a full overhaul of the programme isn't necessary, several key adjustments are essential. Immediate attention is needed in certain areas, especially at Level 6, where better alignment with Levels 7-10 is critical. The group also highlighted the rigidity of the current technical requirements as a barrier to participation, emphasising the need to make skills for Levels 1-5 more accessible and inclusive.
It was also agreed that there will be two sets of compulsory routines for Levels 3-5 to ensure they accommodate the full range of age groups participating at this level and encourage increased participation among older athletes.
Action Plan and Timeline
The group agreed on a clear timeline for implementing these changes:
Call for Feedback
The community’s input is vital to the success of these changes. Draft changes to the Level 1-5 skills will be released by early September, with a request for feedback from coaches, athletes, and other stakeholders. Similarly, draft changes to Levels 6-10 will be released by early October.
The next meeting is scheduled for four weeks from now to review the feedback and finalise the changes. In the meantime, all members of the gymnastics community are encouraged to participate in the dialogue and provide continuous feedback.
These updates aim to create a more inclusive and supportive environment for all athletes, ensuring that the WAG National Programme continues to grow and succeed.
