Team Singapore looks to the next Trampoline World Age Group Championships

Published Wed 18 Dec 2019

The recently concluded 27th FIG Trampoline Gymnastics World Age Group Competition held in Tokyo, Japan from 5 to 8 Dec 2019 has seen a total of 861 gymnasts from 41 countries participated. Amongst them is Team Singapore at their first participation in a FIG International Trampoline event, who were warmly greeted during the orientation meeting.

The competition ground was in the newly completed Ariake Gymnastics Centre (featuring unique architecture design such as Cedar from Mie prefecture was used to craft the spectator benches). There, 3 events were featured in Trampoline Gymnastic; Trampoline (TRA), Double-Mini-Trampoline (DMT), and Tumbling (TUM). 471 participants competed in TRA, 200 in DMT, and 190 in TUM. Gymnasts competed against each other within the age groups of 11 to 12 years old, 13 to 14 years old, 15 to 16 years old and 17 to 21 years old. In addition to the competition equipment in the Field of Play (FoP), there were identical sets of equipment at the adjacent hall, for training and for warm-up before competition.

Against countries with well-established trampoline programmes, the main objectives for TeamSG were to complete routines 1 and 2, and to gain the experience. We were very proud of our four gymnasts who were able to remain calm, focused in order to accomplish their objectives. Their coach Hiroi Tokuma also played an crucial role, sharing her experiences and also constantly encouraging the team throughout the competition.

This being Mr. Lee Kern Choong, a FIG Brevet 4 Trampoline Judge and the National Judging Coordinator first judging appointment in an international trampoline event of this caliber, he would be sharing more of his experience in the next National Judging Course (TRA).

Team manager Mr. William Soh, who is always pushing the growth of Trampolining in Singapore, is on the lookout for future competition within Singapore and overseas such as New Zealand’s Pacific-Rim (Apr), Portugal’s Scalabiscup (July), Canada’s Indo Pacific (Sep) and possibly Hong Kong’s FIG Age Group (Dec).

With this first international representation, we hope to build up a high performance National Team for Trampoline Gymnastics to represent Singapore in the coming years! Members interested please contact Singapore Gymnastics for more information!
