Notes from the AGU Congress 2024

The AGU Congress took place from 20-21 September 2024, Shanghai, China and was attended by President, HPTD and CEO. 

  • Singapore Gymnastics was awarded the hosting rights of the 2025 Senior Asian Rhythmic Gymnastics Championships. Although we bid for both the Junior and Senior Asian Championships, AGU did not award the Junior Championships. Stating that with the 2025 World Junior Championships taking place in Sofia, Bulgaria from 18-22 June the international calendar was too crowded.  Karen presented on the plans for Singapore hosting the 2025 Asian Senior Rhythmic Gymnastics Championships.
  • South Korea presented on the hosting of the 2025 Asian Junior and Senior Artistic Gymnastics Championships in Jecheon, Korea.
  • The 1st Asian Junior Parkour Championships will take palce in Jordan and the 1st Asian nations at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. The AGU considered these national successes as Asian successes. 
    • 54 participating nations, of which 15 (27.8%) were Asian countries.
    • There were 54 total medals available in gymnastics (MAG, WAG, RG, Tramp). Asian nations won 20 (36.4%) total medals. 
    • There were 18 gold medals available in gymnasticsAsia won 8 (44.4%) gold medals.
    • Of particular note was MAG, where there were 24 total medalsAsia won 14 (58%) total medals and 7 of the 8 (87.5%) gold medals.
  • Not surprisingly, there was a strong desire to see more qualification opportunities for Asian gymnastsThis was an important consideration for voting at the FIG Congress, with the theme of Asian Unity, prior to the FIG Congress and elections.
  • There were reports presented from the various technical committees and Asian Zones.
  • A presentation was made by Guangxi region offering a state-of-the-art training centre with full sport science and medicine support services as an Asian Gymnastics Training CentreThe centre has 1,000 bed spaces and is designed for residential training camps with spaces for gymnasts from Asia and Africa, at reduced rates, to train alongside Chinese gymnastsNotably, Vietnam have based male gymnasts at the centre for the past 4 years. 
  • The next AGU Congress will be hosted by Doha, Qatar in December 2026.
