Positively supporting the sports parenting journey

Published Mon 05 Sep 2022

SG will be hosting two targeted interactive workshops for parents with children training in the high-performance pathway. They will look at how parents can help their child fulfil their potential in & out of the sport!

The workshops will be conducted by Gordon MacLelland who is the CEO and founder of Working with Parents in Sport (WWPIS).

He has a background in education and coaching and after a successful career coaching all age groups from U7’s through to adults and running sports programmes in schools, he is now a leading figure in the ‘parental engagement’ space.

He is the author of three books, ‘Two Hats’ – a book for parent coaches who are coaching or thinking of coaching their own children, ‘Great Sports Parenting’ – A pocket guide for parents of children in sport and ‘Engage’ – A coach’s guide to building positive relationships with parents. A fourth book for ‘Performance Sports Parents’ is coming very soon.

His company WWPIS is working with over 10 National Governing Bodies, sporting organisations, football academies, clubs and schools all over the world.

As a speaker he brings a wealth of experience having worked with thousands of performance parents in different sports all over the world.

Singapore Gymnastics have been partnering with WWPIS this year to deliver resources to the community that supports the three most important pillars of our community when creating an athlete-centric environment; parents, clubs and coaches, but with a clear focus on Parents.

This interactive and informative performance sports parenting workshops will cover:

  • An introduction to Performance Sports Parenting
  • The importance of positive role modelling
  • Positives and challenges of sports parenting
  • Managing dreams and expectations
  • Using sport as a vehicle for positive character/life skill development
  • Expecting the ups and downs of the journey

We are thrilled to be hosting Gordon in Singapore and be conducting these and many other interactive workshops with the stakeholders in our community.
