NOTE - UPDATED ON 16th JUNE
Based on the best information available, Singapore Gymnastics has deveoped some simple recommendation for returning to training.
Training at high volume requires a very good physical base, something gymnastics gradually develop for years. When returning to training very limited home training, the volume needs to be increased gradually as this physical base has diminished greatly.
If you are working with athletes who have been working hard to maintain their physical base during the circuit breaker here are some key points:
- Start at 50% of 'normal' volume and gradually incrase over 4 weeks *UPDATED TO 8 WEEKS
- Start on simple/basic skills
- Avoided complex skills toward the end of training when athletes will be fatigued, leading to a greater chance of injury than usual
- Check with the athletes, if their initial soreness is not going away, slow down!
- Overdoing it early leads to long term training lose a month later
If your athletes have not been training at home, you should double the timeframe.
