In the first two months of 2018, our Senior and Junior rhythmic gymnasts from the Singapore Gymnastics (SG) National Training Centre (NTC) Programme participated in the Federation Internationale de Gymnastique (FIG) sanctioned Asker and Australia Cup.
Although the Asker Cup, held in Asker, Norway, is an annual international tournament organized by the Asker Turnforening, it was the first time Singapore gymnasts participated. The Asker Cup, held from 13-14 January 2018, was perhaps one of the more difficult competition experiences for the athletes. Sub-zero temperature and jet lag aside, it was decided that this competition would follow a revised set of international rules, in advance of the official implementation on 1st February 2018. In addition, the athletes were transitioning between coaches and did not have a permanent coach at that point in time. Despite the difficulties, the girls put up a tough fight against strong countries such as Bulgaria, Wales and Ukraine. Senior gymnast Tan Ying, Avryl, achieved 10th place in Hoop with a score of 12.2
The Australia Cup, on the other hand, was held in sunny Gold Coast, Australia, from 16-19 February and functioned as the Pre-Commonwealth Games test event. We are grateful to Gymnastics Australia for the honour and privilege of getting to experience the Games venue first hand and prior to the actual Games. The athletes were no doubt very excited and managed to clinch a team 3rd, coming in behind Australia and New Zealand. Said Team Manager, Choy Dian Chun, “While it will take some time to adjust to the revised rules, I am confident that the girls will overcome this and continue pushing forward to achieve greater heights.”
Here’s wishing the rhythmic gymnasts of Singapore all the best in their upcoming competitions and events. In particular, a big shout out to the RG Asian Championships delegation departing 27th April to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
