Singapore gymnast heading to Jakarta for the 18th Asian Games

Four Singapore gymnasts have qualified to compete at the quadrennial Asian Games. Hoe Wah Toon, Terry Tay, Nadine Joy Nathan and Tan Sze En are all set to join the team heading to Indonesia on August 18th to represent Singapore at the Asian Games.

 

HOE Wah Toon, 29, a fully qualified dentist by profession, will be competing in the men’s artistic gymnastics. He had retired after the 2014 Asian Games in Incheon, South Korea, with a wealth of career achievements;

 

 

  • 2014 Glasgow Commonwealth Games, Individual Vault – Bronze
  • 2013 World University Games (Vault) – 12th
  • 2011 Indonesia SEA Games, Men’s – 4th
  • 2011 Indonesia SEA Games, Individual Vault – 5th

 

However, he was tempted out of retirement the following year to attend the 2015 SEA Games adding to his impressive record:

  • 2015 SEA Games, Individual Floor Exercise -Silver
  • 2015 SEA Games, Team – Bronze

 

Now three years on, and with the flicker of desire to achieve another career milestone he has been drawn back again to attend his second Asian Games.

TAN Sze En is based in America and trains at Legacy Elite. This will be her first Asian Games and after the great disappointment of withdrawing from 2017 SEA Games due to injury she is focused on producing her best performance and very excited to be attending her first Asian Games.

 

“Besides the Olympics, the Asian Games is the biggest sporting event for Singaporean athletes. I’m looking forward to meeting new people, cheering on fellow Singaporeans and competing at my first major championships”

 

 

 

 

 

TAY WEI AN Terry - Serving his country as a full time National Serviceman and returning from injury, Terry has worked hard to gain a place on the team and qualify for what will be his second Asian Games. He is also the first athlete from South-east Asia to have a skill named after him in the FIG Code of Points. He performed the strength skills element ‘The Tay’ during the 44th Artistic Gymnastics World Championships in Belgium, in September 2013 and is also medallist from previous competitions.

Nadine Joy NATHAN is competing in her first Asian Games following on from successful years as a medallist at in the SEA Games and is honoured to be representing Singapore.

  • 2015 SEA Games, Individual – Bronze
  • 2015 SEA Games, Team - Silver

 

I am incredibly excited and honoured to be representing Singapore in the upcoming Asian games. Since it is my first time competing at Asian games, I am excited to be meeting athletes from other countries and I hope to be able to perform my best during the competition."
