Singapore Gymnastics (SG) is thrilled to kick off the final half of our 2024 event calendar with the implementation of the new Rhythmic Gymnastics (RG) National Programme across two of our three upcoming events. Additionally, the Gymnastics Classic International will be conducted under the new Code of Points (CoP) across all three disciplines, marking a significant milestone in our competitive structure.
With the introduction of the new RG National Programme, we understand that there may be questions and concerns. To ensure clear communication and address any potential confusion, we have compiled some of the most frequently asked questions we've received in the office:
Q: What’s the minimum age to compete in an SG competition?
A: As stated in clause 1bv of the 2024 National Event Policy, athletes "must be at least 5 years old at the time of entry into the event." There are no exceptions to this rule for any discipline or competition division. If an athlete is 4 years old at the time of the competition's closing date, they are not eligible to compete.
Q: Are there age divisions in the RG National Levels side of the competition (i.e., RG National Level 1-8 in the new RG National Programme)?
A: For the Gymnastics Carnival and the Classic National, these two competitions have an "open" age format with no specific age divisions. There are no minimum or maximum age limits for these competitions. This approach allows athletes to compete at a level that may not perfectly align with the new RG National Programme, aiding in the transition to the 2025 National Championships. For example, if an athlete is 5 years old at the time of entry, they will be allowed to participate in Level 1 at the SG Carnival.
Please note that starting in 2025, the minimum and maximum ages for each National Level will be enforced. For instance, all athletes competing at Level 1 will need to be turning either 6 or 7 in the year of competition.
Q: Do we have to adhere to the ages stipulated in the Directives for the RG Elite Age Group division?
A: Yes, strict adherence to age requirements is mandatory for the RG Age Group competition. For example, in the Age Group 6 years old category, athletes must be turning 6 in 2024 to be eligible to compete. "Turning 6 in the year of competition" means that the athlete must have their 6th birthday at some point during the calendar year 2024. Therefore, an athlete born in 2018 can compete, while an athlete born in 2019 would not be eligible for the international age group program in 2024.
Q: If it states that athletes for RG can only register for 1 or 2 apparatus, can they compete freehand?
A: Apologies for any confusion. It should have been stated as 1 or 2 routines. For example, an athlete competing at Level 3 at the Carnival can only perform 1 routine, which can be either freehand or rope. Similarly, at the SG Classic National, where it states 2 apparatus, an athlete competing at Age Group 9 can choose to perform two routines only selecting from either: freehand, hoop, ball, or clubs.
Q: For Classic International, WAG & RG FIG Junior is normally for 14-15-year-olds. Are 13-year-olds who will be FIG Juniors next year allowed to participate in the SG Classic International?
A: Yes, the Classic Directives specify that FIG Junior refers to athletes aged 15 and under, with no minimum age mentioned. This means that athletes who are 13 this year and transitioning into the Junior category next year are eligible to compete. The intent has always been to allow athletes to participate in preparation for their transition at next year’s National Championships. Additionally, 15-year-olds transitioning to the senior category next year also have the option to compete in the senior category.
Q: Can a 13-year-old who is not a Singapore citizen compete in the FIG category at the Classic International?
A: Yes, all our events are open to both Singaporean and non-Singaporean athletes. The Classic International is also open to international clubs and federations. For athletes who are non-Singaporean but competing for a Singapore club, please refer to the National Competition Policy for specific requirements.
