Singapore Gymnastics has announced 15 gymnasts who have been selected to represent Singapore at the 31st SEA Games set to take place in Hanoi, Vietnam from 12 to 23 May 2022.
The gymnasts will be competing against the region’s best at the Quan Ngua Gymnasium, where the Women’s Artistic Gymnastics Team won Silver in 2003, the last time the Games were held in Vietnam.
In both Women’s and Men’s Artistic Gymnastics (WAG and MAG), the athletes are eagerly anticipating the team all-around competition as there was no team event at the 2019 Games in the Philippines. WAG Team Captain Nadine Joy Nathan, 22, is competing in her third SEA Games, and having won two team silvers (2015, 2017) and an Individual All-around bronze (2015), she is looking forward to competing as a team and guiding her teammates Shandy Poh, Aryanna Shetty, Emma Yap, Kaitlyn Lim and Cheong Yuet Yung, who are all making their debut:
“I think this year’s SEA Games has definitely been one that we have been anticipating for a while, especially with the pandemic and Games postponement, it is so exciting to finally be able to go out there and put in our 110% for Singapore. Although it wouldn’t be my first games, I’m thrilled to see my younger teammates finally get a chance to showcase their hard work, and I hope to be able to help guide and support them through their first major games as their team captain.”
Competing in his fourth SEA Games, MAG Team Captain Terry Tay, 28, who was part of the 2015 bronze medal winning team, says his teammates inspire him to keep going:
“They say if you want to go fast, go alone. But if you want to go far, go as a team. People ask me if I have any sporting heroes. Definitely- they’re my teammates and coaches. Attitude is everything- they show up everyday putting in the hard work. They inspire and encourage me greatly, and I hope to do the same as we head into this Games together. Our team is excited and ready to go, watch this space!”
Tay leads the MAG Team challenge alongside Robin Sim, Mikhail Hazio, Chong Jer Rong, Kaeson Lim and Zac Liew.
11 out of the 15 gymnasts competing at the Games will be making their debut. And 2022 Rhythmic Gymnastics (RG) National Champion Katelin Heng shares her excitement:
“I am thrilled to be given the opportunity to be part of Team Singapore in the upcoming SEA Games. It has always been my dream to represent Singapore, and I will strive to do my best to bring glory to Singapore!”
Heng will be competing alongside RG Team Captain Leah Chew and fellow debutant Low Yu Yenn.
With so many gymnasts competing in their first major international competition since the pandemic struck, Singapore Gymnastics President Dr. Patrick Liew says it’s important that everybody gets behind our athletes:
“All the gymnasts have trained tirelessly, staying razor focused on keeping fit and improving their skills, even throughout the challenging conditions the pandemic has brought. They’ve sacrificed so much and worked extra hard to get back in competition form. We believe in them, that they will do their best to shine at the SEA Games. So we want to rally not just the gym community, but all Singaporeans behind every Team Singapore gymnast, and every athlete, as they give their all to bring sporting glory to our nation.”
