Sports fans in Singapore can look forward to a world class spectacle this June as the country has been awarded the right to host the Asian Artistic Gymnastics Championships for the first time.
Singapore Gymnastics presented a strong bid at the Asian Gymnastic Union Congress at Doha, Qatar and received the Executive Committee’s stamp of approval.
The 2023 Artistic Gymnastics Asian Championships will feature the region’s best, including gymnasts from powerhouses China, Japan and Korea. Athletes aiming to earn their spots at the Paris 2024 Olympics will first have to qualify for the World Championships in Belgium via this continental event.
Asian gymnasts continue to make their mark on the world stage, with China and Japan placing first and second in the Men's Team event at the World Championships in Liverpool last year. Japan's Daiki Hashimoto also won the Men's Individual All-around.
In the women’s competition, China’s world champion on the Uneven Bars Wei Xiaoyuan and beam champion Hazuki Watanabe of Japan would be expected to shine at this event in their bid to qualify for Paris 2024.
Singapore Gymnastics President Dr. Patrick Liew says having athletes of this calibre in Singapore will be a big boost for the sport and all gymnasts here:
“Hosting the Asian Championships is a crucial step towards our goal of establishing Singapore as a premier hub for gymnastics. Having some of the world's elite gymnasts competing on our soil will inspire and motivate our local gymnasts and aspiring athletes. We anticipate a thrilling event featuring top-level performances and we encourage not only our gymnastics community but all sports enthusiasts to come out and experience it.”
The backing of Sport Singapore was critical in securing hosting rights. “Staging the Asian Championships in Singapore echoes our aspirations to bring international sporting events to the community. With the support from industry partners, we are confident to present a memorable experience for all participants. We hope that an event of this scale will help our Team Singapore gymnasts gain valuable competition experience, uplift the profile of the sport locally, and inspire more young talents to pursue the sport at the elite-level.,” said Roy Teo, Chief of Industry Development, Technology & Innovation from SportSG.
The Senior and Junior event will be held on 10-18 June 2023 in the OCBC Arena at the Singapore Sports Hub. Tickets for the event will go on sale in April, in the meantime look out for updates on the star names that will be coming.
