Singaporean Gymnast Tan Sze En has qualified to compete at the Olympic Games 2020 in Tokyo, after a solid performance in her World Championships debut in Stuttgart Germany.
Finishing with an all-around score of 48.098, the 19 year old was among the list of qualifiers for the Tokyo Games announced by International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) on Sunday night, 13 October 2019.
Sze En is only the second Singaporean gymnasts to achieve this feat, and follows in the footsteps of Lim Heem Wei who was our first gymnast to compete at the Olympics in London 2012.
The Olympic Games is the pinnacle of sporting aspiration for every elite athlete, and Sze En’s achievement has come from an exceptional amount of hard work and dedication. This is even more remarkable considering she had to undergo shoulder surgery in August last year, following the 2018 Asian Games.
Sze En currently trains in Illinois, USA, at Legacy Elite Gymnastics and will put on hold the start of her NCAA career at Stanford University as she prepares for her ultimate competition. And she says her eyes are now firmly on Tokyo 2020:
“I’m really excited to have qualified for the Olympics. Going into World Championships, I just focused on doing my best and didn’t have high expectations of qualifying so this came as a surprise. I’m really thankful for the support from Singapore Gymnastics, my coaches, and family. I couldn’t have done it without them! This is just the first step and I am going to be working hard to do my very best for the Olympics.”
Singapore Gymnastics are absolutely thrilled with the results and President of Singapore Gymnastics, Derek Mollison, says this will unite and excite the gymnastics community:
“We are so happy for Sze En, her family and all who have played a part in her journey. Her achievement is an inspiration to us all and shows every gymnast in Singapore that if they believe in themselves, work hard and dream big, they can compete at a world level. This further spurs everyone within the gymnastics community in Singapore to provide every support to all our gymnasts in their arduous daily training so that they too may achieve their dreams.”
Sze En will be competing at the upcoming 2019 SEA Games in Manilla, Philippines where she is a contender to medal on bars and beam. While the Tokyo Olympics are in sight, she will be focused on ensuring that she has a successful SEA Games campaign to cement herself as one of the top athletes in the region, alongside her fellow Singaporean gymnasts, Nadine Joy Nathan and Shayne Tan.
The Games of the XXXII Olympiad will be held in Tokyo (JPN) from the 25 July – 09 August 2020.
