Terry Tay, one of SG’s most accomplished MAG athletes, has secured a position on the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) Athletes Committee. The election, which took place alongside the Asian Games in September 2023, saw Terry among nine athletes elected to this inaugural committee, which included three-time Olympic table tennis champion Ding Ning of China. In a groundbreaking initiative, almost 8,000 athletes participated in the voting, selecting one female and one male representative from each of the five zones of the OCA — West Asia, East Asia, Central Asia, South Asia, and Southeast Asia.
During the 19th Asian Games Hangzhou 2022, held from October 18 to November 6, 2023, six voting stations were established at strategic locations, including the Hangzhou Asian Games Athletes' Village and sub-sites in Tonglu, Jinhua, Ningbo, Chun'an, and Wenzhou. The results were announced on October 7, a day before the Closing Ceremony.
Singapore emerged triumphantly in the election, with bowler Shayna Ng and Terry chosen to represent the South-East Asia zone.
The elected members will play a pivotal role in choosing a chair and vice-chair for the OCA Athletes' Committee, with the chair securing a seat on the organisation’s Executive Board. A vote for the new chair is scheduled for July next year, contingent on Executive Board approval and requiring a constitutional amendment.
Terry's selection for the OCA Athletes Committee aligns with his current roles as an athlete representative on the SNOC athletes Commission.
SG is filled with immense pride in Terry Tay, who serves as a true role model, embodying excellence not only as an athlete but also as a representative and advocate for fellow athletes.
