Understanding the correlation between Fundamental Movement Skills (FMS) and Dominant Movement Patterns (DMP)

Published Mon 17 Oct 2022

In a human being life cycle, upon the arrival of a baby he will go through from rolling, crawling, sitting, standing, walking and then running.  As a child, he will learn to learn the fundamental movement skills which are considered the most crucial element for lifelong habitual physical activity and sports competence and generally include locomotive (eg, run, skip, hop, and leap), object control (eg, throw, catch, strike and kick) and balance skills.

It is believed that if one can master competence in FMS of which there would be a potential positive correlate of the involvement of children in physical activity.  Thus, it is important to start developing a child’s fundamental movement skills from young to aid in promoting of physical activity later in life.

And what is then Dominant Movement Patterns?

Dominant Movement Patterns are Statics, Locomotion, Spring, Landing, Swing, Rotation and Object Manipulation.   These DMP’s aids to develop a more solid foundation for physical literacy in children and are often related to gymnastics.

By mastering the DMPs which are the basic skills of most gymnastics’ skills, the child is learning the building blocks for more complex skills and can further develop the body control necessary for efficient movement in performing of the gymnastics routines.
