COVID threw a spanner in the works before but we are back on track, the development of the discipline-specific Intermediate Courses are well underway and we look forward to be presenting them to our community in the next couple of months. We received a few commonly asked questions and here are some clarifications:
Q: Who is this course for?
A: The Intermediate Courses are for coaches who have previously completed the Fundamental Coaching Course and/or its equivalent i.e. NCAP, GG and are looking to level up their coaching knowledge.
Participants need to be current SG Technical Members with a valid Standard First Aid certification. Interested participants without the relevant pre-requisites may not be accepted.
The pre-requisites for the course are:
Q: What is it all about?
A: The Intermediate course is discipline-specific and covers a range of technical skills which would equip a coach to coach specific gymnastics disciplines independently. The Intermediate Coach will gain the skills and knowledge to plan, prepare and coach fun and safe gymnastics sessions involving a range of gymnastic and fundamental movement skills relevant to a specific gymnastics discipline and can be applied to recreational and lower competitive levels gymnasts. This Intermediate Coaching Course is geared toward participation and not high performance. It a progression from the Fundamental Coaching Course and also serves as a bridging course going into FIG Coach Academy Level 1.
The course is made up of 3 workbooks and wil be delivered both online and face-to-face.
Workbook 1 - covers the theory of the course. There is pre-readings and MCQs assessment to be completed before the start of Workbook 2.
Workbook 2 - aims to put the content covered in Workbook 1 to application. It is done online over 2 mornings and may combine participants from different disciplines in the same sessions.
Workbook 3 - the practical session to be done face-to-face in the gym either over 3 mornings or 2 full days (dependent on venue availablity, especially during Phase 2)
Upon completion of the online and practical sessions, there is a minimum 20hr attachment which participants must complete with a recognised SG coach mentor. Details will be provided when you attend the face-to-face practical.
Q: Where do/can coaches go after this?
A: Upon successful completion of the course and the attachment, the Intermediate Gymnastics Coach can coach the basic gymnastics skills in the specific discipline in a Club or other gymnastics venue. They are also eligible to apply for full NROC membership with SportSG.
It is important to note and understand that after attending this Intermediate Coaching Course, it does not mean that the coach has "completed" their coaching education. This is only the beginning where coaches are now better equipped with underpinning knowledge, it builds the base for more learning extensions and that actual coaching experience still has to be earned and collected.
The Intermediate Course is also the pre-requisite for coaches who later wish to attend the FIG Level 1 discipline specific courses.
Q: When are the courses going to be up and how can interested coaches sign up for the Intermediate Coaching Course?
A: Interested participants can look under our Events page https://www.revolutionise.sg/singymnastics/events/ to register for the specific discipline coaching course. Our first courses to be rolled are for Rhythmic Gymnastics in mid August.
Dates for Artistic (men's and women's) Gymnastics, Trampoline and Gymnastics for All will be shared at a later date.
