For Singapore Gymnastics, education is one of our passion as Continuing coach education is vital to staying current with evolving sports trends, coaching techniques, and safety protocols. It enhances coaching effectiveness, athlete development, and ensures coaches provide the best guidance. In a dynamic sports landscape, ongoing education is the key to success, growth, and athlete well-being. Thank you to all the coach participants who joined us over three mornings from 6 - 8 September 2023 in Bishan Sports Hall.
We were able to bring in Joy Umenhofer Stovall from the United States to present at this year's coaches congress. Joy's background in trampoline knowledge as well as drills for flips and twists crosses over to Men's and Women's Artistic Gymnastics. Besides presenting her experience, Joy got all the coaches in attendance to try out drills for themselves as part of experiential learning. Her interest lies in educating coaches and athletes in sequential skill progressions for safer, quicker results, by providing an incredible base for understanding skill development.
From the ground we have heard growing interest to understand more about working with special needs participants. Hence we collaborated with APSN to bring a special presentation to our coach participants sharing awareness about various disabilities and educational strategies to work with individuals. We also brought in Dr Alexiaa Sim who specialises in Exercise Kinesiology and was a gymnast herself, and opened up conversations with coaches about her study on gymnasts and nutritional risk issues, healthy eating habits and choices, and the challenges coaches face in raising these subject up with their own athletes.
Our National Training Centre (NTC) coaches also shared their expertise to develop strong stable swings on bars and landings on floor, as well as growing importance of artistry as shown by our Rhythmic Gymnastics NTC coaches to our Artistic Gymnastics coaches in attendence.
Once again, thank you to all who turned up and we look forward to bringing more speakers and workshop topics to our community next year!
